Greetings Members and guests:

Ralph’s Reel Report 9/18/10

With great sadness we say goodbye to 12 Mile Mike (Mike Henry) and Jim Burnett.

Both were great fishermen and lovers of the Siletz.

We will miss them both very much.

Here is my update, dedicated to Jim and Mike:

The Chinook bite is starting!

The colder weather is spurring the spawn. Rain is dropping the water temperature.

Three were caught Thursday by Chinook Bend campers. The largest was 30 pounds, caught by Dominic Corvello. That was his second Chinook caught here this year.

They are using spinners, large sardines, Kwikfish and cut plug herring. Trolling is best.

No Coho yet!

We are surprised nobody has caught a Silver that we know of. The fishery is still on.

This time last year Coho were jumping in the boats! I’m sure they will show up soon.

Crabbing is excellent.

We went out Sunday and caught 34 fat crabs. It took all day and about 500 crabs to get this many keepers but it was beautiful on the bay and we had a great time.

Blueback & Cutthroat:

John Bock caught a nice Cutthroat for Julie’s dinner a week or so ago.

The salmon fishing overshadows trout fishing but they are still in there!

Sturgeon:

A camper reported seeing a big Sturgeon rolling in The Bend a week ago.

No Sturgeon fishermen were present to catch it, as usual.

Sturgeon is very tasty!

Rockfish:

My daughter Shasta and her family went bottom fishing Sunday from Newport. We are enjoying lots of tasty fillets, even after a big fish fry Sunday night. That’s fresh!

We have a lot of members and regulars arriving but there is plenty of room for YOU.

Our rental boats are ready to go. We can launch your boat if needed.

We have rental trailers too. Call Karen to make your reservation and come fishing!

Ralph

Fishing/Whale Watching Update, 04/21/10

Migrating Whales

Gray whales are migrating along the Oregon coast. The whales are moving north along the coastline on their way to the rich feeding grounds of the Bering Sea, and many of the females have calves in tow. Places to observe these migrating mammals include Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center, Cape Kiwanda near Pacific City, Cape Lookout and Anderson Viewpoint located just south of Netarts, Cape Meares located west of Tillamook, Neah-Kah-Nie Mtn. and Cape Falcon located north of Manzanita, Silver Point located just south of Cannon Beach and Tillamook Head (Ecola State Park) located just north of Cannon Beach. Look for signs designating “Whale Watching Spoken Here”, and bring your binoculars and spotting scopes for optimal viewing, which is best on calmer days when the ocean is smooth. 3/31/10.

SILETZ RIVER: winter steelhead

Steelhead angling is fair with best opportunities in the upper river. Catch rates have been fair for both bank and boat anglers around the moonshine park area. A variety of techniques can be productive this time of year as fish tend to be aggressive around the peak spawning season.
