Chinook Bend Resort News
“The road to SUCCESS.”
CHINOOK BEND NEWS
MAY 2008
The Barn Re-Visited
Welcome Chinook Bend Members to the 2008 season. We are very excited about this camping year. We are involved in so many projects; we have just finished the new rustic front porch on the Big Red Barn. This allows us to get out of the rain and be able to relax a bit outside. All of the lumber was trucked from Lake Tahoe where the old growth pine trees had been the subject of a forest fire. The beams were all milled on site and then brought to Chinook Bend one piece at a time. It did my heart good to see something beautiful come from such a devastated area. Stop by and check out the improvements.

Road to Success
We are again tackling the ½ mile gravel road situation. D&K Road Construction is about to start work on road improvements. We are looking into doing some partial paving to cut down on the dust and make the drive in a little easier. I will keep you posted on the progress of this project.
Leg Room?
The bathrooms in the park are about to get a make over. New paint, some new stalls and a few changes to make your visit to the facility a little more comfortable. This is a needed improvement and we are excited about making the restrooms user friendly.
Stores & Floors
The general store has recently undergone a new face lift. New hardwood floors complete with a coffee bar and more usable space. We changed the office configuration to be more efficient when checking in. Karen likes the changes and she can now see into the park while conducting business.
The Flora & Fauna
Bob, Martine, Ralph, Casey and I have been hard at work grooming the resort. With mowers blazing and weed eaters revved to capacity, the park is becoming once again, a spectacular place to be. The Elk are out in droves, lots of new babies and mom’s at their side, they have taken over the golf course for the spring. The Raccoon’s are eagerly awaiting your arrival as they are in need of some people food.
Fishing, Docking, & Pontoon
As a good neighbor upstream wanted to do some changes, he gave us a 20’ dock which we now have built into our dock system. With sack lunches in hand, Ralph, Martine and Bob sailed the 20’ dock down river guided only by the tide. It was quite the site, as on-lookers gawked at the three, like Huckleberry Fin’s great adventure. We have picture to back up this story.
Well the Salmon season is on, the State of Oregon granted us fishing rights for this 2008 season. As no fishing will be allowed in the ocean, the rivers are open for sports fishing, this is good news for us Chinook Bend Members hoping for a better year than last.
Chinook Bend has once again become the proud owners of a pontoon boat. Ralph recently took his test to pilot this party cruiser, and we are lining it up for tours and maybe some crabbing trips for the members. Someone has to break Ralph in on turning this boat around in the river. “Only the brave need sign up.”
From the Barnyard
Well we have some new additions to eh Chinook Bend family: Carl, Clark and Casey (the II) have arrived, they are leash friendly goats. They are well behaved and cute. Carl is the ring leader, Clark is either sleeping or eating and Casey is the escape artist. Jumping fences in a single bound, he is testing Martine’ on a daily basis.
And to round out the farm animal experience, we have acquired a 26 year old mare named Chancy She is a true female, setting the 5 cows straight upon entering the pasture. They (the cows) thought they were top dog until meeting Chancy; she has set the pecking order straight, proclaiming she is going to run things. The Llama are standing back taking it all in, we will have to wait and see how this plays out between the Chinook Bend herds.
New Upgrades
Friends and members pulled together to create a new and user friendly dump station. It is currently under construction with new concrete poured and a roof almost complete. It looks good and makes for easy clean up after use.
Out the back door of the general store, we have added an awning to keep us dry while the BBQ is at work. The awning was donated to us by Vern and Elaine Jakubiak, new members who came to us from Lake Berryessa Cal. Thanks Vern and Elaine for the new awning and the help installing it.
Saddened by Loss
The Chinook Bend Staff would like to express our thoughts and prayers to the Dekker family for the recent loss of Dick, the Vogel family for their loss of Dick, the Daubert family for their loss of Violette, and the Rhodes family for their loss of Mike. They all we be missed as they had been part of the Chinook Bend family for many years. If you would like to send a card to any of the families, please forward them to the resort and we will make sure they get to the families.

Lincoln PD Pig Roast?
During the month of July, Chinook Bend Resort has offered up the services of our staff to support the Lincoln City Police Department. This will entail cooking a pig underground and hosting a team building for the department. These guys and girls go above and beyond for us, so we would like to give back. Come and meet the boys in blue and show your support by giving a hand in the cooking arena.
Ralph has been experimenting with some new recipes to try on us this season. He has discovered prime rib as a sandwich, and other delights that will be a surprise for us all. He had lots of time this winter to think about food and now he is ready to try it out on us. It will be hard for him however, to beat the members “hobo stew” prepared in the campground by the faithful members. If you have not had the opportunity to be part of this tradition, you have missed out on a great meal.
Retirement is fast approaching
Well, my retirement from law enforcement is fast approaching and I am nervous yet excited for what the future will hold. Supported by my close friends and family, I am ready to make the leap. Here I go into full time campground management. I can only hope it will be as challenging and exciting as the last 30 years as a cop has been. I believe it will as now I will be surrounded by people I want to be with, not with people I had to be with. “Chinook Bend members are the best”
Looking forward to a great spring on the Oregon Coast
