Chinook Bend Resort News

“Welcome”

CHINOOK BEND NEWS

Spring 2011

 "Cleanup Crew"

Welcome to Chinook Bend Resort’s 2011 season. This upcoming camping year will be full of adventure and fun for the entire family. The staff is hard at work preparing the resort for members by completing several maintenance projects, most currently is the clean up of the park after the flood. Martine, Bob and Carrie have shoveled most of the mud from the restrooms and are cleaning and burning debris that was left from its path.

 "Party Like a ROCK STAR"

We have several events planned for the season, memorial day, the 4th of July and labor day just to mention a few. We have a series of “concerts in the park” events planned. Chinook Bend members are organizing a couple of “pot luck” gatherings and we are looking at holding a membership BBQ this spring, complete with an elk feed (or for those who wish not to eat elk) burgers and dogs. We are setting up a “over the hill golf pitch and putt” tournament, and as in years past, the traditional “hat party”. This is just a few of the events planned for this season.

 "Farm News"

The Llamas (Sandi and Diego) are doing well. As in the past, they fled ahead of the flood waters and then returned shortly after the water receded, where they go is anyone’s guess. I think they stick close to home because the chow is pretty good for them during the camping season.

The goats (Sedrick and Junior) are also recovering from a very stressful flood ordeal. As they did not heed the warning from the Llama, they stuck around and became stranded on a stump for 20 hours plus. As soon as was possible, Martine and the boys attempted a daring pontoon boat rescue, negotiating the flood waters and rescuing them from the tiny stump perch. Sedrick was taken to the vet and was treaded for some minor injuries and I think stress, but he is now doing fine.

 "Floods? Just another Winter"

Speaking of the flood, just days before, I raked the entire park of leaves only to have the entire area become a lake. At least I burned some calories as all my work was for not.

A special thanks to Officer Bobby Bomar and his wife Kathy (and friends) of the Lincoln City Police Department along with Dan Kauffman and his crew from D and K Gravel company. These great guys came to our rescue on a moments notice and assisted with moving all of our equipment and campers from the looming flood waters. Without their help, our losses would have been enormous.

We have recovered well from the high water. The park really looks good after everyone pitched in on the big clean up. It’s amazing what a little flood water will do to clean up a resort.

 "Fishing  Yarns"

The fishing has been good for steelhead and we are looking forward to a great 2011 salmon season. Ralph has been busy keeping up with “Ralph’s Reel” on what is the latest information on fishing and crabbing conditions. The crabbing has been plentiful and when the weather cooperates, a pontoon boat trip into the bay is spectacular.

 "Elk Herd"

The heard of elk seem to be multiplying. At last count, there were 81 on or near the golf course. Martine can tell you exactly where they go as he continually is fixing the fences that the knock down.

 "Fire Dancing"

We have brought in some new large group campfire rings for member use and for large group events. Martine as built some new fire pits within the campground and each one it seems he personalizes.

 "Member News"

We have been speaking with Allen Fisk and Gary Wenning (and their wonderful wives) who are Chinook Bend members. They are always there to help out with any special event. Gary is a retired welder and is drawing up plans for a large BBQ which we can use for member events and large group functions. This will be a great addition for Chinook Bend.

We have several new members who have joined this winter. James Cannon and his family, Dave Charleton and his family, just to mention a few. Welcome to Chinook Bend, we are looking forward to meeting up with you around the campfire.

Bobby Sessions and his mother and father (Dave and Sandra Hendricks) have spent most of the winter with us at Chinook Bend, they are great members and really have helped us out with keeping the resort running smooth, Bobby has been our eyes and ears for security, and his dad, Dave has been helping us with the mowing and weeding of the park, and grading the roads: thanks to Bobby and his mom and dad for all they have done this winter.

 "Manager Movements"

Ralph and Karen have been hiding out for a couple of months in California. They gave up a nice wet winter in Oregon for 5 feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Ralph tells me he really did miss his friends in Oregon. They are now both back and adjusting to the rain and wind, they really did miss us. Welcome back Ralph and Karen.

 "Volunteer and get some Exercise"

We are looking forward to any members who want to give us a hand with planting some flowers, trimming back some of the walking trails, doing a little painting and just helping spruce up the campground. If you are interested, send us a note on what you would like to become involved with.

"The End"

All of us at Chinook Bend are ready for a fun filled 2011 camping season. Remember to send us an E-mail or give us a call for your reservations as soon as you know your travel plans, we will see you all later around the campfire or at a pot luck at Chinook Bend.

Great camping and best wishes
